Hard

things are hard, and that’s why they’re hard.

The Self-Doubt Spiral (and the Slow Work That Matters)

I can’t be the only one who, at the drop of anything, spirals into self-doubt and just an “ahhh… F it” mentality, can I?

Self-destruct in 5.4.3.2…… 💣️

If you do GREAT. Well… not great, but it means I’m not alone in the continuous torment our industry gives us.

This week I wanted to give you an insight into why sometimes the hard things are hard and that’s exactly why they matter…. management (some may sayyy 😀).

Also, perhaps too many podcasts this week, but I keep coming back to this: you have to think about scale in the unscalable.

LegalTech, as we all know, is in boom town (yay).
But here’s the bad news: LegalTech is in boom town.

Which means the volume of noise our prospective clients (lawyers, GCs, legal operations teams) have to deal with has never, ever, been louder.

So how do you get noticed in a crazy-busy ecosystem?

You do stuff that’s slow, annoying, and hard.

For example, yesterday I spent eight hours in an office writing thank-you slips for our first event, for our beautiful attendees and people we’d like to see in the future.

Managed to nail eight episodes of Succession while doing it (never seen it before, not bad. I’m sure that’s not a secret at this point).

Our printing partner has done a truly lovely job, but of course, self-doubt sets in.

Allow me to give you the highlight reel:

  • Handwriting of a three-year-old.

  • Branding all over the place.

  • Questioning if anyone will care.

  • Will people scan the QR code?

  • How does the Landing Page look

But here’s the thing, they will. Maybe not everyone, but enough people. And in a world where everyone is playing the fast, automated, “send-to-all” game, small personal touches still land harder than anything else.

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the noise, remember:`Go slower. Do the unscalable. Be a little imperfect.
It’s amazing how much that stands out when everyone else is chasing speed.

In other news: I just spent an unholy amount of money on www.legaltech.jobs. Why?

We run a recruitment firm that’s not for everyone. If you’re a founder making your second hire, you probably won’t use us yet, and that’s okay. Until you’re ready to scale, we’re building low-cost ways to help you get noticed from day one, so when growth time comes, you’ve already got momentum.

Even if you’re not ready for us yet, we still want you to win.

Much love
