I'm fine...
Ross Geller circa 2000's
I normally sit at the table on a Wednesday morning and go,
“Right, what pain can I put on the page this week to share with you guys?”
But today, Tuesday, 26th at 10:15, I felt compelled to get this on paper early.
To be clear, before I see an ambulance turn up outside with a couple of dudes in white jackets talking to me in a very calm voice, I am 100% fine. But, like most (if not all) of us, sometimes it’s a real graft just to get going, regardless of success or the perception others may have of you at work.
And legaltech sales will do that to you.
Honestly, I feel it is one of the hardest markets to work in. I dream of the day when I’m selling tech to salespeople —that seems like the dream. Instead, I’m selling sometimes really crap tech to lawyers, who are trained to smell BS and are quite happy with the status quo. That dynamic makes the job a real challenge.
I’ll admit, I spend too much time on Reddit. But the stark reality you see there is very different from the polished LinkedIn lawyer-land vacuum of self-congratulation.
When people are anonymous, they’ll tell you the truth: they don’t like tech, they don’t trust AI, their clients aren’t asking for it, everyone is content billing the hour, and change is something that may never truly arrive.
To quote my boy Ross Geller, “I’m Fine”……..with that
And you know what? That’s actually useful. It gives us a clearer lens to position conversations differently, to stop pretending that enthusiasm and hype will carry the day, and instead accept that the profession moves slowly, cautiously, sometimes painfully.
The silver lining is this: once you accept that reality, you stop fighting the tide and start working with it. You learn patience. You learn to listen. You frame solutions not as “revolutions” but as practical tools for specific pains. That’s where trust builds. That’s where momentum comes from. And that’s the only way, in my view, that legaltech moves forward:
one small win, and one lawyer at a time.
Much love - Rob
Man, I should really pitch LegalTech recruitment more, maybe next week 😄
